Andersonville, Chicago Neighborhood History

Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood was originally a Swedish settlement founded in the late 19th century. The neighborhood’s main commercial street, Clark Street, was once known as “Swedish Broadway” and featured numerous Swedish businesses, restaurants, and cultural institutions. During World War II, the area became a hub for German prisoners of war, who were housed in a camp that is now the site of Andersonville’s commercial center.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Andersonville underwent significant changes as many of its Swedish residents moved to the suburbs and new waves of immigrants, including refugees from Southeast Asia, began to move in. Since then, the neighborhood has become increasingly diverse, with a mix of residents from different backgrounds and cultures. Today, Andersonville is known for its vibrant community, thriving local business scene, and historic architecture.
