5 Tips for Staying Productive When Working from Home

Posted by Dominic Irpino on March 31, 2020

With the spread of coronavirus affecting all of us, most of us find ourselves having to adjust to working from home, maybe for the first time ever.

Working from home can be a challenge. Your normal routine is thrown off. You might have kids or other family members at home that can make it difficult to focus. Plus there’s so many added distractions like television, household chores and the snack cabinet 🙂

That’s why we wanted to check in to see how you’re doing and to provide you with:

5 Tips for Staying Productive When Working from Home

1. Designate Your Space

Find a spot in your home that is just yours. Even if you have to makeshift a desk. It’s important to have a space that you associate with work (i.e. not your bed or couch) so your family or roommates know that when you are in that spot, you mean business. A comfortable space where you can shut the door is preferred, but if that’s not possible, a quiet corner with a table can work too.

2. Set a Schedule and Stick to it…Most of the Time

Having a clear schedule for when to work and when to stop for the day lets your family know when to leave you be and helps maintain a work-life balance. That said, stay flexible. Sometimes your schedule might need to shift around, you might need to take breaks for various reasons. During these times it’s important to cut yourself some slack.

3. Utilize Technology as Much as Possible

Need to have a face to face meeting with colleagues? Try scheduling it via video chat. Zoom and Google Hangouts are both great options. For larger meetings and conference calls, try setting up a webinar using GoToWebinar. There’s also a lot of online chat services for faster communication with your co-workers like Google Chat and Slack. Ask your employer to send you a nice headset for handsfree calls. Maybe now is the time to order a mouse and keyboard for better ergonomics as opposed to using just your laptop. There’s so much technology available to you. Make sure you set yourself up for success.

4. Get Yourself Ready for the Day

It can be really tempting to stay in our sweats all day every day during this shelter in place. But the simple act of getting dressed and putting yourself together for the day can make you feel much more productive. An added bonus is you are camera ready for any last minute video calls with your colleagues!

5. Prioritize Your Mental Health

With everything going on around us, now it is more important than ever to focus on our mental health and overall well-being. Being cooped up in our homes and not having real human interaction for weeks on end can be difficult. Make sure to take it easy on yourself. It’s okay if you don’t stick to your schedule every day. Take breaks. Meditate. Stretch. Take a bath. Go outside and take a walk. Play with your kids. Or play a board game with family members at home with you. We are all in this together. Let’s do our part to take care of ourselves and one another.

As always, we are here for YOU. Contact us if you need ANYTHING at all. Wishing you and your family good health,
